Amazing Facts about Kenya

There are many aspects about Kenya that make me proud to say I am a Kenyan.

• Considered the cradle of mankind because it has the largest collection of human fossils in the world and evidence of man's earliest settlement was found in Koobi Fora in northern Kenya.
• Location of one of the "Seven New Wonders of the World", the wildebeest migration where over two million animals migrate from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the greener pastures of the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya during July through to October.
• Location of Mt. Kenya the second highest mountain in Africa with a height of 5199 metres.
• Kenya is the biggest and most advanced economy in east and central Africa.
• Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 and was the first African woman to do so.
• Lupita Nyong'o is the first Kenyan actress to win an Oscar.
• Kenyan athletes dominate the world in middle and long distance running. Kenya has produced more world class athletes, more world record holders and more Olympic Medalists in long distance running than any other country. Dennis Kimetto holds the current world record for the men's marathon.
• UN agencies the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) both have their headquarters in Nairobi.
• Kenya pioneered the use of mobile phones to send and receive money.
• Kenya is world's largest producer and exporter of black tea.
