When I got to Kenya in 2004 one of the things I missed the most about the US was the availability of public libraries and bookshops. The problem with bookshops in Kenya is that unlike the US they won't allow people to walk in, pick a book from shelf, sit down and read it. The books are also quite expensive as compared to the US.
There are very few public libraries in Kenya and they don't come with a great fiction section. Also seating space in the public libraries is mostly taken up by students studying, doing homework or research.
My salvation came when I discovered a bookshop called The Book Villa on Standard Street in the City Centre near Ebrahims. The Book Villa sells mostly secondhand and some new books. The great thing about this bookshop is that by paying an annual membership fee one can borrow up to 7 books at a time.
I stopped visiting The Book Villa a few years ago when I started reading eBooks. Now downloading eBooks is how I do all of my reading.
I read books from a variety of genres but mostly fantasy fiction and science fiction. Some of my favorites include the following:
- The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (RIP)
- The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind
- The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher
- The Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton
- The RCN series by David Drake
- The Honor Harrington series by David Weber
- All books by Neil Gaiman
- All books by Robert Ludlum (RIP)
- The Nicholas Linnear series by Eric Van Lustbader
- The Nightside series by Simon R. Green
- Magician by Raymond E. Feist
- The Tamuli by David and Leigh Eddings
