KDrama

The very first kdrama(Korean drama) I ever watched was Sad Love Story. It used to air on KBC on Saturdays at 4pm. At first I thought it was a Japanese show it was only much later I discovered it was Korean. To this day I have no idea why or how KBC decided to air it but I enjoyed it very much. A number of kdramas have aired on KBC over the years including Jewel of the Palace.

Years later, bored out of my mind I was idly surfing online when I came across some torrents for a show called Playful Kiss. I was intrigued so I downloaded one episode, discovered I could not understand one word so went back to the site and downloaded the subtitles. Sixteen wonderful episodes later I was hooked on kdrama. It was completely different than any other TV show I had ever watched. Unlike US shows which can be a bit formulaic and go on forever with numerous breaks; kdramas usually run from sixteen to twenty-four episodes with two episodes shown during the week until the show ends. Majorty of kdramas do not have sequels which can sometimes be a let down, but I still find the writing for these shows for the most part to be much better. Of course US shows have their own appeal which is why I watch them but if I'm totally honest I prefer kdramas,
From kdramas, I started watching jdramas(Japanese drama) like Hana Yori Dango and twdramas(Taiwanese drama) like Devil Beside You. Over the years I have amassed quite a collection and whenever I'm bored I like going back and watching my favorites again and again

Today the only place to watch kdrama in Kenya is online or on GBS the Christian broadcaster from Korea. Kdramas have been credited with starting and propagating the Korean Wave which the American political scientist Joseph Nye interprets as "the growing popularity of all things Korean, from fashion and film to music and cuisine." There are a number of Korean restaurants in Kenya and it is a dream of mine to eat at one someday and see if they have the same dishes I have seen on various kdramas.
A few of my favorites include:

  • City Hunter
  • In Time With You
  • Secret Garden
  • Faith
  • A Gentleman's Dignity
  • I Hear Your Voice
  • My Love From Another Star
  • God's Quiz
  • Winter Sonata
  • Shut Up Flower Boy Band
  • The Master's Sun
  • I Need Romance
  • Personal Taste
