Anime, Comics and Manga

I first got into anime by watching Silver Hawks, Thundercats and Saber Rider on Kenyan television as a kid. As a I grew older I watched Rurouni Kenshin also known as Samurai X and my love of anime was cemented. When I found at that the anime were originally comics known as manga(Japanese comics), I started reading them as well. Most of the anime I've watched or like either started as a manga or a light novel(Japanese visual novel) The same is not true of adaptations of American comic books like Spiderman or Iron Man. In most cases I like the comic book better than the cartoon adaptation.
I get most of my anime, comics and manga online. There are a few rare bookshops in Nairobi where I've seen comic books for sale, but the selection is always very small and quite expensive. I wouldn't even begin to know where to find anime or manga in Kenya apart from the Internet.
I usually read more manga than comics because manga are easier to find online. However if you are persistent and patient it is usually possible to find a couple of issues of a comic online. Of course it becomes easier the more popular a comic is because people are more likely to share what they enjoy online.
There are a number of sites that allow people to read manga online like MangaBB. I prefer to download manga instead so I can store what I like, to read later; but some titles are only available online. A few of my favorites include:

  • Naruto (which is now ended)
  • One Piece
  • Bleach
  • Breaker: The New Waves
  • The Tower of God
  • Noblesse
  • Vagabond
A few of my favorite anime include:

  • Sword Art Online
  • Naruto Shippuden
  • Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei
  • Aldnoah Zero
  • Log Horizon
  • Inuyasha
  • Rurouni Kenshin
